11 Austin travel businesses whose website blocked our scanner — common when a site filters datacenter traffic, and not a sign the site is broken. Listed with their site; a blocked site is never scored zero.
The firms, funds and institutions that set the terms in travel — context, not local listings; never scored.
Where to go, how long to stay, and how to string stops into a trip that actually works on the ground.
Guided tours, day trips and activities — the fastest-growing part of travel spend and the easiest to sell online.
Packing, safety, money, connectivity, documents and first-timer advice.
Direct booking vs OTAs, booking windows, timing and how travelers actually arrive at a rate.
Routes, capacity, fare rules, ancillaries and the airport-to-destination leg most itineraries get wrong.
Ocean, river and expedition cruising — cabins, shore excursions, repositioning sailings and what the fare does and does not include.
When to go — shoulder season, monsoon and dry season, school holidays, weather and crowd levels.
Customs, festivals, cuisine and travelling respectfully rather than extractively.
Transfers, rail, ferries, ride-hailing, driving and inter-island logistics.
Villas, hotels and rentals — how to choose, what the rate includes, and what to expect on arrival.
How tourism boards, DMOs and visitor bureaus attract, spread and increasingly limit visitors.
GDS, channel managers, booking engines, allotments and net rates — the plumbing behind every reservation.
Overtourism, carbon, community benefit and the certification schemes buyers are starting to ask for.
Guides, reviews, user-generated content and creator video — where trip inspiration now actually starts.
Koh Samui, Phuket, Bangkok and the islands — seasonality, visas, transport and local booking behaviour.
Texas as a destination in its own right - Austin, San Antonio, Houston and the Hill Country; state parks, the Galveston cruise homeport, wine and heritage trails, and a drive-market weekend economy that behaves nothing like international leisure.
a destination marketing or management organisation; explain that most are funded by hotel occupancy tax, which is why their remit is tourism rather than general economic development
one markets and manages a destination, the other is a paid ground operator for a specific group
explain that Texas restricts the revenue to tourism-related uses, so the political argument is about allocation within that envelope
hotels assess themselves to fund destination sales; explain who votes it in and what it typically pays for
explain why drive markets hold up through airfare spikes and why that matters for Texas destinations
demand exceeding supply across a market on the same dates; give the mechanism rather than a rate
explain the yield and capacity argument, and that in Texas the shoulder now carries the outdoor season
explain distribution, payment and reach; the commission band varies by channel and contract, so describe rather than quote
metasearch compares and refers, the OTA takes the booking; explain who owns the customer in each case
who marks up and who invoices whom; explain why the same room has two very different contract prices
describe familiarisation trips for advisors and media; whether they pay back depends on the destination's conversion tracking
meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions; explain that the buyer is a planner or corporate, not a consumer
visitor caps, timed entry, cruise limits and per-night tourist taxes; note these now change what a trip costs and whether it is bookable at all
travellers ask an assistant for an itinerary instead of scrolling results, so structured, factual, machine-readable content is what gets used
the direction is well documented - users click less when a summary appears - but the effect on a specific site needs their own analytics
shift to booking pace, assisted conversions, branded search and direct share rather than raw sessions
